This trend has burst onto the scene after award-winning author Christopher McDougall’s bestselling book Born to Run. The book is based on Mexico’s Tarahumara tribe, who are famous for running long distances at impressive speeds with nothing but a thin sole of rubber strapped to their feet. This story is all set to be made into a movie.
Harvard University researchers proved that running barefoot can lower the risk of injury, while burning 600 calories an hour, which is almost double the amount while running with Air-Maxes. The main purpose of running barefoot is to keep the posture and motion as close to natural as possible, rather than relying on the modern athletic shoe.
However, for those who are accustomed to the relaxed air-conditioned ambiance of the gym, suddenly starting off barefoot might prove hazardous, so researchers have suggested using a ‘transition shoe’ that’s close to your natural foot shape for 12 months, before trying to ape the heroics of the Tarahumara tribe.
Many sports apparels manufacturers have come up with designs to serve this purpose like Vibram Five Fingers, VIVOBAREFOOT and even Adidas Trainers, which are more easily available at a lower price than the others.
