Unfortunately, the problem is being made worse by some people looking to circumvent New World’s ability to log out those who have gone AFK or away from keyboard. In most online games, going idle will trigger the game to log the player out in order to make room for new players to enter. To get around this, players who need to leave the keyboard find a way to keep their character active, typically by performing small movements to keep their session considered active.

AFK Time Subversion isn’t unique to New World, though with the server queue issues the game has been experiencing at launch, it’s certainly been in the spotlight. One fan managed to perfectly show off the issue and posting it to the New World subReddit. The video captured by Pitty_ shows a random house filled with players who are AFK, but making small movements like jumping or running against a wall to trick the game into thinking they’re active. Considering that some players continue to sit in long lines just to get in and play, most agree that behavior like this is unacceptable.
Numerous other games have seen issues like this as well, especially other MMORPGs like the incredibly popular Final Fantasy 14. However, Square Enix managed to find a solution to this problem alongside the Shadowbringers expansion launch. In addition to increasing the server capacity by a large margin, the game now boots anyone who’s been idling for 30 minutes. To get around the AFK time subversion players, Square Enix also enacted a daily server-wide kick, sending everyone back to the main menu and having to log back in at a specific time of day.
